Rev. Raphael Warnock

reflection by Ella Grace Harris

Reverend Raphael Warnock is the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the same church Martin Luther King Jr. had preached in. I became really interested in learning more about Warnock after realizing that he is a pastor at the church I was able to attend  over spring break last year. I admire how he is able to be both a pastor and a public voice at the same time. He shows that faith does not have to stay hidden inside the church, but it also does not have to lose its heart when it steps into the world. His role in the Black Baptist tradition matters because he continues to preach in a way that connects worship to justice.

Warnock grew up in Savannah, Georgia, in a big family where faith and hard work were a big part of everyday life. Seeing how his parents cared for their community helped shape the way he understands faith, not just as something personal, but as something that shows up in how you treat people. Growing up in a Black church and later studying theology helped him learn how to connect the Bible to what people are actually going through. All of that played a role in shaping his calling to serve both the church and the community with humility and purpose.

As the senior pastor of Ebenezer, Warnock speaks honestly and a lot about injustice. His message is that worship should not end when church is over. It should carry into how people live their everyday lives by helping those that’s are in need, standing up for people who are treated unfairly, and caring about other humans who may be different from you. Outside of the church, he talks about how faith can guide how people show up in the world without turning church into a political argument. His leadership shows that it is possible to stay spiritually grounded in god and your beliefs while still caring about what is happening around you.

I think Warnock’s story matters because a lot of churches struggle with how to speak up without losing who they are. His example shows that you can stay rooted in prayer and scripture while still being brave enough to care about justice and people.

A Voice of a Leader – Poem by Ella Grace Harris

From Ebenezer’s church he started to lead,
Helping people out whenever they’re in need.
He talks about fairness and doing what’s right,
Encourages others to stand up and fight.

He became a senator, making history in Georgia,
Working for health care, jobs, and a future that’s fairer.
He tries to lift up families who struggle each day,
And make things better in a real, honest way.

Even though the work is tough and takes time,
He keeps pushing forward with a strong, steady mind.
Reverend Warnock inspires hope wherever he goes
A leader who cares, and it truly shows.
