Serving at Second

At Second Baptist Church, we believe everyone has gifts to share, and there are many ways to serve and lead within our church family. Whether your strengths are teaching, caring for others, organizing behind the scenes, or helping guide important decisions, there is a place for you here. Serving is not just about filling a role—it’s about joining in God’s work, growing in faith, and building community together.

In order to effectively lead a group, leaders need time within the system to better understand and appreciate the history and motivation behind why we do what we do. Because of this, we ask that our members take time to be present and active in the life of our congregation before jumping into leadership roles on committees or in work groups. We also ask that our leaders participate in training and skill building that will help them become more effective leaders. Members of the standing committees and work groups described below will be chosen with consideration given to knowledge and engagement in the life of the church while also paying careful attention to training up new leaders. You will also find a list of other opportunities for service listed in this packet. These are great ways to get involved and to serve while also getting to know the rhythms and vision of the church. We hope this packet will help you better understand the way our church functions and will help you find your place of service and leadership at Second Baptist Church.

Standing Committees

These five standing ministry committees serve as essential support teams within the church each focused on a key area of ministry and church life. The Finance Committee oversees the church’s financial health, budgeting, and stewardship. The Human Resources Committee helps manage staff support, policies, and personnel needs. The Lake Nixon Committee promotes and assists with outdoor ministries and activities at Lake Nixon. The Ministry Placement Committee thoughtfully matches church members to leadership roles. Lastly, the Mission Committee guides and supports the church’s outreach and mission projects both locally and beyond. Members must be active church members to serve on these standing committees. Together, these committees help the church fulfill its mission through good governance, caring for people, community connection, and faithful outreach. Each committee operates on three-year term rotations with the exception of Lake Nixon that operates on a five-year term rotation. Trustees are also a part of our annual nomination process, though they are not officially a standing committee. Trustees operate on a five-year term rotation.

Nomination Process:

The Ministry Placement Committee is starting to select members for committees in the 2026 calendar year. If you’re interested in serving on a committee or want to recommend someone else, please fill out the information at the bottom. Letting us know you’re interested doesn’t commit you or the committee to anything—it simply helps us consider everyone thoughtfully. Because there are many interested people but only a few openings each year, not being selected this time doesn’t mean you won’t have a chance in the future.

Work Groups

Work groups are flexible ministry teams that differ from standing committees in structure and duration. Unlike committees established by the church bylaws, work groups form as needed and can dissolve once their purpose is complete. They do not follow the same rotation or membership rules as standing committees. Leadership roles within work groups are determined by the group itself and submitted to the Ministry Placement Committee for approval. While work groups are open to non-members, the chairperson must be a church member. Group size and whether or not members rotate is decided by the group. Some work groups serve for just one season, while others continue for many years, adapting to the changing needs of the church.

Work Group Formation Process:

Since this is our first year formally designating work groups, we will begin by recognizing the groups already active: Hospitality, Property, and Family Ministry. Over the coming year, we will develop and introduce a process for forming new work groups to meet the changing needs of the church. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to get involved!

Other Ways to Serve

There are many ways to serve in the life of Second Baptist Church that don’t involve participation on a committee or work group. Below you will find more details about a few of those opportunities.

Choir

The choir rehearses on Wednesday nights from 6:00-7:15 pm in the choir room. Rehearsals begin the first week of October and continue through the second week of December. They resume the week before Ash Wednesday continuing through Holy Week. The ability to read music is not required but helpful. We sing traditional 4-part choral anthems as well as contemporary praise and worship arrangements.  The choir gathers on Sunday mornings at 10:00 in the choir room for a brief rehearsal before worship.

Vocal Team/Ensembles

Vocal Teams and Ensembles sing in worship throughout the year and typically rehearse on Wednesdays at 6:00 pm or on Saturdays at 10:00 am. Rehearsal with band begins at 9:00 am on Sundays for a complete run through of the service. Occasionally music memorization is encouraged.

Reading & Praying in Worship

Thoughtful reading that includes appropriate pauses and attention to the context of scripture, responsive readings and prayers help set the tone and enhance the flow of worship. Occasionally a rehearsal and sound check on Sunday morning before worship is required.

Family Ministry

It takes around 12 volunteers each Sunday and 3 volunteers each Wednesday to keep our Children and Youth Ministries going each week. We need folks to teach at all ages (preschool, 1st – 5th grade, and 6th – 12th grade) as well as folks who are willing to be an extra presence in the room for all of these ages as well). Sunday School volunteers serve from 9 am – 10:15 am on Sunday mornings. Wednesday night volunteers serve from 5:30 – 7:15 pm.

We also need volunteers to play with our youngest learners on Sunday mornings during worship in Extended Care from 10:15 – 11:30 am. This time is structured play and allows our volunteers to interact in small groups reinforcing their play with important truths about God’s love for us and for others.

All of our volunteers are required to be active participants in the life of our church for at least 6 months, must read and agree to follow our Child Protection Policy, attend an onboarding training, and agree to a background check (paid for and run by the church).

Food Pantry

The Second Place Pantry is a client-choice food pantry serving the residents of Downtown Little Rock. Volunteers have opportunities to help with unloading and shelf stocking on Monday mornings and serving clients on Wednesday mornings. Volunteers must complete an online training and sign up using an online platform, Volunteer Hub.
